Wind turbine sales - units

Sales units DKThe Danish manufacturers had a world market share of approx. 40% in 2004.

The development in wind power technology means that the average capacity of wind turbines rises every year. This development means that the sold capacity is divided on fewer wind turbines and therefore the sales in MW remain the same in 2004 even though the sales of units have declined.

Notes

  1. Nordex no longer manufactures wind turbines in Denmark and is no longer included in the statistics. This explains the decline in 2003. The turnover of the remaining Danish manufacturers increased by 5%.
  2. The statistics do not include component kits with a value below 1/3 of the value of a complete wind turbine.
  3. Power company purchases of turbines until 1991 are computed from the change in the stock of installed turbines.
  4. The sales in megawatts of rated power are a much better measure of production than the number of wind turbines produced, since wind turbine sizes have grown very quickly during this period, cf. table 3. The wind turbine generator sizes in megawatts are measures of the maximum power production capacity of wind turbines (energy production per unit of time). One cannot analyse or calculate electricity production from this table, since electricity production depends on local wind conditions, the hub height and the rotor diameter of the wind turbine. The electricity production (energy production) from Danish wind turbines (installed in Denmark) is shown in table 13. Please note, that electricity production depends more on the rotor diameter than on the installed power of the generator. The rotor area is thus an even better indicator of production capacity than the nameplate power of the generator.
  5. In addition to the registered complete units, there were substantial exports in 1995-96 of wind turbine components to be assembled in India.
  6. The statistics in the graph on page 3 have been corrected as follows: 330 MW exports have been moved from 1998 to 1999. 40 MW for
  7. the Danish market has been moved from 2001 to 2000. These corrections are due to the fact that some manufacturers have reported their data in accordance with their accounting principles rather than actual deliveries (shipments).
