LM Glasfiber – pushing back the limits

LMLM Glasfiber is the world’s largest supplier of wind turbine blades. We develop between five and eight new blade types each year, producing the blades ourselves at factories in Canada, the USA, Spain, Denmark, India and China. Total production worldwide is in excess of 8,000 blades a year.

Wind turbine blades look simple enough, and most people probably think they are all identical. But in fact wind turbine blades are developed specially to match the type of wind turbine on which they are to be installed – and this requires advanced calculations, laboratory tests, and full-scale tests as well.

At LM Glasfiber the largest development department in the business works hard every day to optimise the output, durability and price of our wind turbine blades. Our engineers are constantly pushing back the limits of what you can achieve with composite materials, advanced aerodynamic design, and specially designed production equipment – they are constantly pushing back the limits.

LM Glasfiber leads the world with regard to competencies in the fields of aerodynamics and aeroelasticity, structural design, calculations and simulations, and materials and process technology. We have achieved this position thanks to our constant focus on the development of our internal competencies and the ongoing development of our laboratories and test facilities.

Wind tunnel

At our head office in Lunderskov, Denmark an impressive building houses the latest expansion of our research and development facilities – the first wind tunnel in the world built specially to test wind turbine blades. The tunnel is evidence of the fact that if you want to be a leader in the wind energy industry, you have to focus on know-how.

Bettina Jørgensen, Assistant reports that “At LM Glasfiber we regard the development and retention of know-how as a vital competitive parameter. In many cases we appoint recently graduated engineers and then carry out an intensive internal course of training. For instance, you might start in a project group then follow a complete blade development project; or specialise long term in aerodynamics, polymer chemistry, composites, material mechanics, structural mechanics, machine construction or automation. A career as a specialist is just as valuable as a career as a manager, and both options are open to our employees.”

At LM Glasfiber we employ graduate engineers with either a BSc or an MSc specialising in the areas listed above.
